Top-Seeded VCU Advances to Women’s Tennis Semis

CINCINNATI, Ohio—Top-seeded VCU won its first match of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship, defeating No. 8 Fordham 4-0 Friday afternoon at Queen City Racquet Club. The first two of Friday’s quarterfinals were moved indoors following rainy weather in the area.

VCU, which received a bye through Thursday’s opening round, won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to capture the doubles point. The team of Ludivine Burguiere and Sitilia Rencheli combined to beat Hanna Fritzinger and Bella Genkina, 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Salome Kvitashvilli and Angie Dabu then won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2 over Fordham’s Angie Dabu and Julie Leong to secure the point for VCU.

The Richmond-based Rams then won at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match. Ludivine Burguiere beat Julie Leong at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2 and Olga Barscheuskaya won at No.4 singles over Bella Genkina, 6-2, 6-1. Daria Yakauleva defeated Sarah Ali, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to secure the win.

VCU (10-9) advances to Saturday’s semifinals to face the winner between No. 4 Richmond/No. 5 Massachusetts. Fordham finishes at 10-10 overall.
