Saint Louis Defeats GW; Will Face VCU in A-10 Final

MASON, Ohio—The 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship final will feature the top two seeded teams after No. 2 Saint Louis upended third-seeded George Washington 4-2 in the semifinals at Lindner Family Tennis Center Saturday.

The Billikens (17-4) advance to face top-seeded VCU, 4-0 winners earlier in the day over No. 5 Massachusetts. The Rams and Saint Louis will square off in the Sunday final, which will be played at 10:00 am with an NCAA bid on the line.

The Colonials (9-6) struck first, winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Isabella Escobar and Taylor Nederlander defeated Stephanie Hollis and Urzendowski at No. 1, 8-6 and the team of Christina Carpenter and Leah Pascarella beat Natalia Yacaman and Maria Toro Moreno, 8-6 at No. 3.

But Saint Louis came storming back in singles, winning first at No. 3 behind a 6-0, 6-4 win by Yacaman over Nederlander. Then Madison Cook took No. 6 singles over Carpenter, 7-5, 6-4 to give SLU a 2-1 lead. Aspen Cervin won No. 1 singles in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (1), beating Lana Robins.

GW picked up a singles win at No. 2 when Pascarella beat Hollis, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, but SLU finalized the win with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles by Toro Moreno over Escobar.
