MASON, Ohio—Top-seeded VCU advanced to its second straight Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship Final with a 4-0 win over fifth-seeded Massachusetts Saturday afternoon at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
VCU will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Saint Louis and No. 3 George Washington Sunday at 10:00 am. The winner of the A-10 Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Rams (11-9) opened their semifinal match by winning the doubles point, starting with an 8-4 win by the team of Salome Kvitashvili and Yukako Noi over Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper. Cindy Chala and Ludivine Burguiere then beat Anna Woosley and Jessica Podlofski at No. 3 singles, 8-4 by winning the final four points to break a 4-4 tie and give VCU the doubles point.
VCU’s three singles wins began with Kvitashvili beating Arielle Griffin, 6-0, 6-1. Chala then beat Yuliana Motyl 6-2, 6-2 and Burguiere beat Podlofski 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match.
UMass, which pulled off the only upset of the championship to date in their quarterfinal win over No. 4 Richmond, finishes at 13-9 after winning its first two matches of the weekend.
