Rhode Island Takes Home A-10 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Rhode Island’s men’s team captured the 2014 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday, the Rams’ third A-10 title in the last four years.

Rhode Island was able to maintain its lead after Day One and finished with a total of 191.5 points after 22 scoring events to outpace runner-up George Mason, who finished with 169 points. Duquesne (102), VCU (97) and Saint Joseph’s (80) rounded out the top five. Massachusetts finished sixth with 68.5 points followed by La Salle (68), Fordham (42) and Saint Louis (38).

Over two days of competition, Rhode Island won several events including the Pole Vault (James Strawderman), Hammer Throw (Mahlik Handley), Javelin (Nick Danner) and the Decathlon (Trent Baltzell) while racking up a total of 20 medals throughout the championship.

George Mason’s Adrian Vaughn was named the Men’s Track Performer of the Year after winning both the 200 meters (21.18) and the 400 meters (47.06). Vaughn was also a member of the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay teams that finished first in their respective events.

VCU’s Brandon Ruffin was honored as the Men’s Field Performer of the Year after finishing first in the Hammer Throw (17.35m) and the Discus (51.02m).

La Salle’s Chris Sanders won Rookie of the Year after finishing first in the 800 meters (1:51.61). Rhode Island’s John Copeland was named Coach of the Year.
