DAYTON, Ohio - Fourth-seeded George Washington advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship semifinals with a 1-0 victory against fifth-seeded Rhode Island (12-5-2) Thursday at Dayton's Baujan Field.
With just about a minute left in the first half, GW's Kate Elson headed a cross from Brittany Cooper off the left post into the back of the goal for the only score of the game. George Washington (12-5-1) put five shots on goal in the first half, finally breaking the scoreless tie before the half ended.
Rhode Island (12-5-2) pushed for an equalizer in the second half, putting three shots on goal out of eight total attempts, but were unable to beat George Washington keeper Miranda Horn. The Rams outshot the Colonials 14-9 for the game and attempted five corners to GW's three. Katie Nickles made five saves in the losing effort, while Horn made four.
George Washington will meet top-seed La Salle in tomorrow's first semifinal at 5:00 pm. The teams met in last year's quarterfinal round, with La Salle finishing on top, 2-0.
