Explorers Win Double-Overtime Thriller
DAYTON, Ohio - Defending champions La Salle scored a golden goal from freshman Kristin Haugstad in the 103rd minute against George Washington to advance to the 2014 Championship finale at Dayton's Baujan Field on Friday.
George Washington (12-6-1) gained momentum midway through the first half, scoring the first goal of the game in the 20th minute. Senior Elizabeth Casey sent a free kick in from near midfield to senior Meg Murphy who fired a shot into the net past goalie Jessica Wiggins.
The Explorers (14-4-2) came out strong in the second frame, tying the game just five minutes after intermission. Senior Kelsey Haycook received a ball from Jessika Kagan inside the box, then made a move past her defender for a shot towards the lower left corner of the goal. The goal is Haycook's 19th of the season.
The teams battled for control for the remainder of regulation, forcing a pair of overtime periods. In the 103rd minute, Kagan made a run down the right side of the field, sending it across the field to Kristin Haugstad, who buried the goal on a one-touch from the left post.
La Salle held the offensive advantage, outshooting GW, 17-11. Wiggins registered four saves for the Explorers, while freshman Miranda Horn tallied five.
With the win, the Explorers advance to its third straight A-10 Championship game. La Salle will face the winner of No. 2 VCU and No. 3 Dayton.
