Duquesne Advances to A-10 Semis with Win Over Rhode Island

RICHMOND, VA— Third seeded Duquesne defeated Rhode Island 66-53 in the Quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship Friday Afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum.

Duquesne advances to the A-10 Semifinals and will face Dayton on Saturday at 1:30pm on CBS Sports Network.

Amadea Szamosi scored the first basket of the game to give Duquesne (21-9) an early lead before Rhode Island (17-13) tied the score 2-2 with 18:57 remaining in the first half. Symone Bullard scored a jumper for the Rams to gain a 2-point advantage.

The game was tied again at 7-7 with 15:36 left in the half. Rhode Island held the lead for the next five minutes but Duquesne kept it close, allowing the Rams to lead by no more than four points. A three-pointer from Emilie Gronas gave the Dukes its third lead of the game, 17-16 with 10:02 remaining until halftime.

The Rams went on a 9-2 run to hold a 25-19 advantage with 7:09 remaining. Duquesne tied the game 25-25 with less than five minutes remaining. Duquesne went on a 4-0 run to hold a 29-25 advantage at halftime.

The Rams opened the second half on a 4-0 spurt to tie the game for the fourth time, 29-29 with 16:47 remaining. The score was tied for the final time at 31-31 the 16:00 minute mark. Over the next nine minutes, Duquesne went on a 14-6 run to stretch their advantage to eight points at 45-37.

Rhode Island responded with a 12-3 run to reclaim the lead, 49-48 with 5:04 to play. The Dukes used a 13-2 run to  take back the lead and extend it to double digits for the first time, 61-51 with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Olivia Bresnahan knocked down the final two free throws for Duquesne to claim the 66-53 victory.  

Sydney Lewis led Rhode Island with 13 points. Samantha Tabakman led Rhode Island with seven rebounds.

Duquesne shot 45.8% overall and 69.6% from the free throw line, while Rhode Island shot 38.6% overall and 28.6% from the line.
