UMass Claims Second Consecutive A-10 Field Hockey Crown

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts claimed its second consecutive and 14th Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Championship overall with a 2-1 victory over Richmond Saturday afternoon at UMass’ Garber Filed. 

With the win, the top-seeded Minutewomen improve to 18-4 overall and earn the A-10’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Matchups for the 19 team tournament will be announced Sunday at 10:00 p.m. on The second-seeded Spiders drop to 14-7 on the year.

UMass scored just under six minutes into the game when All-Championship Team selections Alexa Sikalis and Izzie Delario set up fellow All-Championship Team member Hannah Prince for a goal off a penalty corner.

Delario doubled the UMass advantage at the 14:45 mark when she deflected a Cliodna Loughlin shot past Richmond keeper Anna Zarkoski to make it 2-0.

Richmond responded 1:46 later when All-Championship choice Amy Cooke scored on a penalty corner following feeds from Helen Warner and Christina Ambrose.

The teams played a scoreless second stanza with Richmond holding a 4-2 edge in shots but the Spiders were not able to put any of those on goal.

Each team had eight shots on the day and Richmond held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Zarkoski made four saves, while Sam Carlino turned away the only shot on goal she saw for the Minutewomen.

UMass defender and reigning two-time A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Lauren Allymohamed was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player after anchoring a Minutewomen defense that surrendered just one goal over the weekend.  The junior also scored the game-winning goal in a double overtime win over VCU in the semifinals.
