CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte freshman starting pitcher Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory HS) was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-American First Team, the organization announced on Monday. It was the second Freshman All-America team he has earned a spot on, also named to the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball squad last week.

Barnette, the Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Year, was second on the 49ers squad with nine victories (9-2) and ended his season with a 2.29 earned run average after 90.1 innings. He finished third on the team with 56 strikeouts in his first collegiate season. He tossed one complete game in his inaugural campaign and was part of two of Charlotte's 11 shutouts in 2011, a top-five total in college baseball this season.

Only twice this season did Barnette give up more hits then innings pitched, finishing with 18 fewer hits (72) than innings this season. He allowed the second-lowest slugging percentage against (.292) on the team and the third-lowest batting average against (.224) in 2011. He had the fewest wild pitches and balks among Charlotte's regular four starters.
