RICHMOND, Va. -- Graduated Richmond senior Abby Oliver signed a professional basketball contract with Israeli team Elizur Netanya earlier this week.
“I am very excited to be able to continue to play the game I love,” said Oliver. “Playing overseas will be a great experience and it will be an opportunity for me to grow as a basketball player and as a person. I have come a long way to get to where I am and I could not have done it without my family and all of my coaches and teammates throughout the years.”
Oliver, the program’s seventh all-time scorer, and nation’s best at the free-throw line, will begin play for the Elizur Netanya at the end of September. The 11-team league features squads from various regions of Israel. The league allows four Americans to play for each team. Only three Americans may be on the court at one time.
The city Netanya, the home base for Oliver’s team, is located on the Mediterranean Sea. The basketball season lasts six months. Oliver will depart for Israel at the end of September and not return to home soil until March or April.
The Roanoke, Va., native finished her decorated four-year career as the program's seventh leading scorer (1,488 points) and the nation's best at the charity stripe (106-113, 94%). Oliver was an All Conference first team selection after leading the league in points per game (16.5).
Oliver ranked fourth in three point field goals (152), second in games played (129), eighth in free throws (296) and ninth in field goals (519).
