Temple's Mahoney Advances To Finals At NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - Temple's Travis Mahoney advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships running the fourth-fastest time in his heat crossing the finish line in a time of 8:47.31.

Mahoney was one of four student-athletes representing the Atlantic 10 Conference on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The junior from Old Bridge, N.J., will be one of 14 runners competing in Friday's 3K steeplechase final, set for 8:30 p.m. (EST).

"This is a great accomplishment for the program," said head coach Eric Mobley, "and a testament to how strong Travis has been running all year long. I'm very happy for him. It's a testament to the hard work of (distance coach) Matt Jelley as well."

Charlotte had two student-athletes participate on the first day of competition with Jake Deaton in the men's discus and Darius Law in the men's 400-meter dash.

Deaton placed 18th in the discus event with a throw of 174-01. The Mooresville, N.C., product earned honorable mention All-America in the event with the 18th-place showing, and will compete in the shot put on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Law, who compiled one of the most prolific careers in Charlotte track and field history, closed out his NCAA track and field tenure in the men's 400-meters on Wednesday. The 2010 Indoor All-American product ran 26.27 for 22nd place.

Richmond's Andrew Benford just missed advancing to the finals in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase as he finished 15th in a time of 8:50.11, one place out of the top 14 that qualified for the event final.

Day two of competition at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships continues on Thursday, June 9 as five more student-athletes representing the Atlantic 10 will be in action including Temple's Robert Keogh in the men's hammer thrown; Richmond's Heather Roush in the women's javelin, Nicol Traynor in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and Matt Llano in the men's 10,000-meter run final; Charlotte's Keara Thomas in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
