NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason senior forward Wes Sever and Massachusetts goalkeeper Nick Ruiz have been named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively for matches played between August 30 and September 1.

Sever helped George Mason defend its DC Cup title and capture its first two matches as members of the A-10. Sever recorded both of Mason’s game-winning goals in the season-opening weekend for the Patriots. Mason went 2-0 with victories over Howard and American. On Friday night against Howard, the Belleair, Fla. native was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute and blasted it past the keeper for the only goal of the match.  In the final game of the D.C. College Cup on Sunday night, the senior recorded two shots, both on target, converting a chance in the 50th minute to break a 1-1 tie and send Mason to a win over Patriot League preseason favorite American.

Ruiz was named to the Hotels at Grand Prairie All-Tournament Team after posting a 0.44 goals-against average as he made 16 saves, including a career-high nine in a 0-0 tie against Evansville. He also made six saves in 95 minutes of a 1-0 overtime loss at Bradley, who was receiving votes in the preseason top 25. Both Evansville and Bradley received multiple first place votes in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll.
