NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU’s Emilie Soares has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, while Saint Joseph’s freshman Marin Vreeburg was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week for games played Sept. 30 – Oct. 6.
Soares helped VCU to a 2-1 week with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Two of Soares strikes were of the game-winning variety and she posted at least one tally in each of the Rams’ three contests. In an 8-1 win over Appalachian State on Sunday, the Santa Clara, Calif. native notched her second hat trick of the season and third of her career.
A Voorschoten, Netherlands native, Vreeburg scored the first two goals of her collegiate career on Wednesday as the Hawks topped rival Villanova, 5-3. It marks the third consecutive win in the series for SJU. Vreeburg then assisted on SJU’s lone goal in a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Rider on Friday. She currently ranks second on the squad with four assists, and her eight points are tied for second on the team.
