Four Named Weekly Volleyball Award Winners

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Dayton senior Shayne Brown has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week and George Washington freshman Chidima Osuchukwu was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. Duquesne sophomore Taylor Lockett and VCU junior Janelle Sykes shared the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week award. The four awards were announced Monday for matches played from Oct. 7-13.

Brown led the Flyers to a split week with 4.00 kills per set, tallying double-digit kills in both matches. An outside hitter from Lakewood, Colo., she posted a match-high 13 kills while adding six digs and three blocks in Dayton’s sweep of Fordham on Friday. On Sunday, Brown recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 19 kills and a career-high 13 digs at Rhode Island. She hit .267 for the week and averaged 2.38 digs per set while also recording four blocks.

Lockett made the most of Duquesne’s only match of the week, a 3-1 win over Saint Louis. She tallied a match-best eight blocks versus the Billikens, a 2.0 blocks per set average. The eight block assists also tied a career-high for the middle hitter from Golden Valley, Minn. Lockett also contributed to the offensive effort with five kills and a .364 hitting percentage.

Sykes averaged 1.77 blocks per set for VCU in a 2-1 week. The Clifton, Va., native had at least seven blocks in all three matches last week, including eight each against George Mason and George Washington. A middle hitter, she also had 19 kills for the Rams.

Osuchukwu was instrumental in a 2-0 week for GW that included a win over previously undefeated VCU. She hit .361 with 16 kills against just three errors while posting 14.0 blocks (2 solo, 12 assist). In Friday’s 3-0 win over La Salle, Osuchukwu tallied six kills against one error and added three blocks (one solo, two assists). A middle blocker from Virginia Beach, Va., she followed that performance with 10 kills and a season-high 11.0 rejections (one solo, 10 assists) on Saturday as the Colonials snapped the Rams winning streak.
