Naples, Eckenrode, Adewole Earn A-10 Menís Soccer Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham keeper Alex Naples and George Mason’s Jannik Eckenrode have been named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week, while George Washington’s Tobi Adewole garnered Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season.
A native of East Patchogue, N.Y., Naples posted back-to-back shutouts this weekend against UMass and Rhode Island, helping Fordham secure its first two league wins of the year and vaulted the Rams into a tie for six-place in the A-10 standings. Naples made four key saves in each contest to improve his record to 5-7-1 on the year and lower his GAA to 1.03. They were the third and fourth shutouts credited to Naples this season.
Eckenrode scored both goals this weekend for Mason, including the game winner against Saint Joseph’s on Friday in overtime. The Springfield, Va. native helped Mason to an overtime win against Saint Joseph’s, scoring in the 95th minute after assists from Hugh Roberts and Zak Haapaoja led to the golden goal. On Sunday, Eckenrode tied the game at one apiece in the second half after being down 1-0 on a goal in 50th minute, his fourth of the season. The goal helped GMU manage a tie with unbeaten La Salle.
Adewole tallied the first three points of his collegiate career – all in dramatic fashion – in GW’s 2-1 double-overtime win at Rhode Island on Friday. Adewole scored the equalizer with just 43 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime; it was his first career goal. Then in the fifth minute of double overtime, Adewole set up Eddie Painter’s game-winner after causing a URI turnover in the midfield. The freshman from Ashton, Md., also played 63 minutes at UMass on Sunday and took one shot.
