NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham’s Steve Sholdra and Duquesne’s Meghan Smith were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored was Austin Nguyenphu of Saint Louis, who earned Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Megan Polaha of Fordham, who earned Women’s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off performances from Oct.21-Oct. 27.
Sholdra, a sophomore from Renton, Wash., posted five individual event victories over two meets against Marist and Fairfield. Against Marist, he won the 500-yd freestyle (4:38.02), the 1,000-yd freestyle (9:29.38) as well as the 200-yd butterfly (1:54.20). He also recorded individual victories in the 100-yd backstroke (54.76) and the 200-yd breaststroke (2:12.45) against Fairfield.
Smith, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., won all three of her individual events as the Dukes defeated Saint Francis, 151-111. Smith recorded first-place finishes in the 200-yd butterfly (2:07.81), 200-yd breaststroke (2:27.83) and the 400-yd individual medley (4:36.10).
Nguyenphu, a freshman from Southlake, Texas, helped pace the Billikens this past weekend against William Jewell and Truman State as he recorded first-place finishes in both the 1,000-yd freestyle (10:00.60) and the 200-yd breaststroke (2:08.40). This marks the second time Nguyenphu has been named the A-10 Men’s Rookie of the Week this season.
Polaha started her collegiate career with three individual event victories and three relay victories as the Rams defeated both Marist and Fairfield. Against Marist, she captured the 200-yd IM (2:07.83) and 200-yd butterfly (2:03.35) along with swimming a leg of the 400-yd medley relay. Polaha followed with wins in the 200-yd backstroke, 200-yd medley relay and the 200-yd freestyle relay against Fairfield.
