UMass Ranked in Both Major Polls; Four Others Receiving Votes
AP Top 25 / USA Today Coaches Poll
Newport News, VA – Riding an eight game win streak to open the season, the Minutemen of Massachusetts are currently ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls, both of which were released on Monday.
UMass ranks No. 22 in the AP Poll and jumped up two spots to No. 20 in this week’s Coaches’ Poll. VCU, Saint Louis and George Washington are receiving votes in the Coaches Poll, while Dayton joins the Rams and Colonials in receiving votes in the AP poll.
Behind A-10 Co-Player of the Week Chaz Williams, UMass topped Eastern Michigan and BYU last week to run its record to 8-0. Williams, a senior guard from Brooklyn averaged 22 points and 11.5 assists in those two games.
George Washington’s Maurice Creek buried a step-back jumper with 0.6 seconds left to lift the GW men's basketball team to a 77-75 victory over Maryland in the 19th annual BB&T Classic at the Verizon Center on Sunday. The victory moves GW's record to 8-1, which matches the team's best start since also beginning the 2005-06 season with eight wins in nine games. For his efforts, Creek joined Williams as A-10 Co-Player of the Week.
VCU improved to 8-2 following a mid-week overtime win over Eastern Kentucky and victory over in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday. The Rams have now won four games in a row.
Mike McCall Jr.’s tip-in at the buzzer lifted Saint Louis to a thrilling 67-65 victory at Valparaiso Saturday night at the Athletic Recreation Center on the Valpo campus. With the win, Saint Louis improves to 8-2. The Billikens have won three of their last four games.
Dayton split a pair of games last week, topping Delaware State 56-46 on Wednesday, before falling to Illinois State on Saturday. The Flyers currently sit at 7-2 on the season.
