NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Michael Glenn of Massachusetts and Mali Kobelja of Richmond have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored was George Washington’s Liam Huffman, who was named Men’s Rookie of the Week, while Richmond’s Irina Chiulli was named Women’s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off performances from Jan.6-12.
Glenn, a junior from Overland Park, Kan., led the Minutemen to the Rhode Island Invitational title with three individual wins and was part of the 400-yd medley relay team title as well. Glenn captured first-place in the 100-yd breaststroke (59:03), the 200-yd breaststroke (2:08.88) and the 400-yd IM (4:08.40).
Kobelja, a senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., led the Spiders with two first-place finishes in a hard fought team loss to William & Mary. Kobelja recorded first-place finishes in both the 100-yd breaststroke (1:05.47) and the 200-yd individual medley (2:06.35). She also finished third overall in the 100-yd butterfly with a time of 57.23.
Huffman, a freshman from Riverside, Mo., finished first in the 1,000-yd freestyle (9:49.56) and second in the 500-yd freestyle (4:44.84) at the Rhode Island Invitational. Huffman also swam the second leg of the 400-yd free relay team that finished first with a time of 3:11.09.
Chiulli, a freshman from Westwood, Mass., tallied a total of 13 points for the Spiders against William & Mary as she finished first in the 3-meter dive with a mark of 294.67, and finished just behind teammate Katherine Cook with a score of 217.13 in the 1-meter.
