Newport News, Va. -- VCU outfielder James Bunn has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week. La Salle's Joey Ravert and Dayton’s Charlie Dant shared Pitcher of the Week honors, while the Flyers Mark Giesler was tabbed as the A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Bunn hit .421 and played a pivotal role in the Rams' 4-1 record this week, batting out of the two spot. The Princeton, N.J. native posted eight hits, including one double. The sophomore leftfielder also scored nine runs for an offense that racked up 29 runs over the week. On the year Bunn holds the second best batting average on the team at .355 and has scored the most runs, with nine.
A sophomore right hander, Ravert earned the win on Sunday vs. Saint Louis, striking out a career-high five batters in his second career start on the hill. He limited the defending A-10 champs to just three hits and one unearned run in 7.2 innings of work
Dant pitched his first complete game of his career against Belmont on Sunday, earning Dayton a 4-1 win over the Bruins. In nine innings, the sophomore righty gave up just one run and walked only two, while striking out seven batters. He needed just 120 pitches to go the distance and even Dayton's record at 3-3 on the year. Dant earned his second victory of the season (2-0) and now boasts an ERA of 2.25.
Giesler had an outstanding collegiate debut for the Flyers, pitching three shutout innings at Middle Tennessee State this weekend. In his first outing for Dayton, the Jasper, Ind. native came out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out one in his appearance. He held opposing hitters to a .100 average as well. The 6-4 righty is expected to be a big part of the Dayton bullpen this season.
