A-10 Announces Weekly Tennis Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –  George Washington’s Nikita Fomin and VCU’s Alexis Heugas have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Tennis Co-Performers of the Week, while Aspen Cervin of Saint Louis garnered Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week honors. Also honored was VCU’s Jean Baptiste Mateo and Rhode Island’s Taylor Holden who earned Men’s and Women’s Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week.

MEN’S CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Alexis Heugas, VCU
Senior | Jurancon, France

Heugas, a senior from Jurancon, France, went 5-1 overall last week in the top singles and doubles position, including two wins against ranked opponents, helping the Rams pick up two team victories. Against No. 11 Mississippi State, Heugas and partner Nick Jones defeated the 55th-ranked pair of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp, 6-2 before taking a 6-5(3), 6-3 singles win over No. 52 Florian Lakat. Heugas also picked up doubles victories against Texas Tech and Boise State.

MEN’S CO-PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Nikita Fomin, George Washington
Senior | Moscow, Russia

Fomin went undefeated in his singles and doubles action against Old Dominion, helping GW hand the Monarchs their first loss against an unranked opponent this year. Fomin and Danil Zelenkov secured an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win before the senior took care of ODU’s Dante Terenzio at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

WOMEN’S PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Aspen Cervin, Saint Louis
Freshman| Houston, Texas

Cervin, a freshman from Houston, Texas, posted a perfect 6-0 week as the Billikens went undefeated last week. Cervin paired with teammates Maria Toro and Taylor Monken for three wins at the No. 2 doubles spot. In the top singles position, the freshman rallied from behind twice, defeating SIUE’s Lexi Aranda (2-6, 6-2, 6-0) and S.E. Missouri State’s Valeriia Kashina (4-6, 6-4, 10-8), in addition to a straight-set win (6-0, 6-1) against Missouri Baptist’s Nika Juricic.

MEN’S ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Jean Baptiste Mateo, VCU
Freshman | Marseille, France

Mateo was named Rookie Performer of the Week for the fourth time this spring after going 3-1 in singles and doubles action last week. In VCU’s win against No. 11 Mississippi State, the freshman went to match point with Rishab Argawal, picking up a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory that would prove crucial in the 4-3 VCU upset. Mateo, partnered with Alejandro Argente, won their No. 3 doubles matches against Texas Tech and Boise State.

WOMEN’S ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Holden, Rhode Island
Freshman | West Chester, Ohio

Holden picked up her third win of the season against LIU Brooklyn’s Lisa Maas at No. 2 singles helping the Rams to a 5-2 victory. A West Chester, Ohio native, Holden defeated Maas 6-1, 6-1, improving to 3-1 at No. 2 singles.
