NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—La Salle senior Mike Johnson and Rhode Island sophomore Joe Leavitt have been named the Atlantic 10’s Co-Golfers of the Week. La Salle freshman Joe Markmann earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, which were for tournaments played April 2-8, were announced Friday.
Johnson earned his second-straight top five finish and paced the Explorers for the second straight time with a four-over 146 (76-70), good for third place out of 100 golfers at the Lafayette Invitational. He led La Salle to a fifth place finish out of 15 teams. It marked his sixth top-five finish this season and the 26th time in his career. His 70 on Monday was the lowest score by any player in the field either day. Johnson, a native of Ambler, Pa., also placed fifth last week at Villanova Invitational.
Leavitt finished second overall out of 54 golfers with a four-over 146 (74-72) after posting a 1-over 72 during the second round of the Rhody Invitational. His low round of the tournament came during the second day of play as Leavitt registered four birdies over the final round of play. In the first round, the sophomore carded a three-over 74 for the Rams, posting 11 pars and two birdies - the par 4 15th and par 5 6th. His second round 72 was a key score in Rhody's second-day comeback that lead the Rams to a first-place finish out of eight teams.
Markmann tied for 19th out of 100 at the Lafayette Invitational with a 152 (78-74). It was his best finish and score as an Explorer and the second round 74 was one off his collegiate low. La Salle’s top finishing freshman, the Doylestown, Pa., native helped the Explorers to a fifth-place finish on the 6,655-yard, par 71 Silver Creek Country Club.
