NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—VCU’s Adam Ball and Rhode Island’s Billy Walthouse have earned the Atlantic 10 Conference’s weekly golf honors the league announced Thursday. Ball was named Golfer of the Week while Walthouse claimed Rookie of the Week honors. Both awards were for tournament played April 9-15.
Ball recorded his fourth top five finish this year, tying for fourth out of 62 golfers at the River Landing Intercollegiate. He shot a 215 (70-71-74) at the 6,923-yard River Landing Country Club. A sophomore from Richmond, Va., his stroke average of 71.67 was under par and his final score was one-under, helping VCU place second in the 10-team tournament.
Walthouse finished in a tie for seventh place, with a two-round total of 147 (72-75), helping the Rams to a fourth place team finish at the New England Division I Championship. It is the best finish of the spring so far for the freshman from Longmeadow, Mass. After an even-par 72 in the first round, the freshman carded a second round 75 on Sunday. His first-day score of 72 tied his low spring score and helped him finish at just three-over with a stroke average of 73.5.
The 2014 Atlantic 10 Men’s Golf Championship, which will be played at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Fla., begins next Friday, April 25.
