NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has added Saint Francis University (Pa.) as an affiliate member in the sport of field hockey the league announced Thursday. The Red Flash will begin play in the A-10 this fall.

The Red Flash are the second affiliate member in field hockey, joining Lock Haven, which joined the league as an affiliate member in 2010. The addition of Saint Francis brings the total number of field hockey-playing institutions in the A-10 to eight. That number will reach nine in 2014 with the addition of Davidson College, which is joining the Atlantic 10 in all sports.

“We are pleased to add Saint Francis as an affiliate member in field hockey,” stated Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “Their addition brings in a strong program that fits well within our footprint and they will be an asset and will further enhance A-10 field hockey.”

Massachusetts and Richmond have traded the Atlantic 10 field hockey title for the past four years, with each team winning two. The A-10 has won each of its NCAA Play-in games over the past three years as well.

SFU coach Stacey Bean, earned conference coach of the year honors last season and will enter her sixth year with the Red Flash this fall. Bean coached at Rhode Island from 2002 to 2006 and was named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2006. Saint Francis had the best season in program history last year, earning a 12-6 record to claim a share of the conference regular season championship.  It will return 16 letterwinners and eight starters from the 2012 team.

Saint Francis, which will be the fourth Pennsylvania-based A-10 field hockey team (La Salle, Lock Haven, Saint Joseph’s),  was 1-1 against A-10 teams last year, winning a 3-1 contest at Lock Haven and dropping a tight 1-0 decision at La Salle.
