NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU’s Stephanie DeMasi has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, while Lock Haven’s Lydia George was tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Week for games played Sept. 23-29.
A senior defender from Virginia Beach, Va., DeMasi helped the Rams to a pair of shutouts over the weekend. In addition to anchoring a backline that has not surrendered a goal over the last 177 minutes of play, DeMasi scored two goals and added an assist in a pair of Ram wins. DeMasi assisted on VCU’s first goal in a 6-0 win over Siena on Friday. That assist moved her into a tie for the school record with 24 for her career. DeMasi would add a goal later in that game before scoring the lone goal in the Rams’ 1-0 victory over Davidson on Sunday.
George helped Lock Haven improve to 8-2 on the season, providing game-winning goals against Rider and Kent State over the weekend. On Saturday, George scored the game’s only goal when she knocked home a rebound in the 58th minute to help LHU beat former conference-rival Rider. Sunday, she was at it again. Just 2:41 into OT, she converted to give Lock Haven their second straight shutout. All three of the Carlisle, Pa. native’s goals this season have been game-winning strikes.
