NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington goalkeeper, Nicole Ulrick has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week while GW’s Kate Elson and Duquesne’s Maggie Mayo have earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. The student-athletes are recognized for games Sept. 30- Oct. 6.
Ulrick, a senior keeper for the Colonials, played 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, earning her third shutout of the season. In GW's Atlantic 10 opener against Rhode Island, the Holland, Pa. product tallied a career-high10 saves and faced 16 total shots in a 1-0 win. Ulrick has played all 870 minutes in the net for the Colonials, totaling 36 saves and a .783 save percentage, good for fifth in the league. With the win, George Washington improved to 4-2-3 (1-0 A-10) and will continue conference play when they host La Salle on Friday, Oct. 11.
Elson scored her first career goal and the game-winner, lifting George Washington over Rhode Island, 1-0, last Friday. With just under two minutes left in regulation, Elson sent a ball to the top left corner past a diving Rams goalkeeper. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has one assist on the season, coming in a 3-1 loss to St. Francis (Pa.)
Mayo, a forward from New Albany, Ohio, had a part in two goals in a 3-1 Duquesne win over St. Bonaventure last week. Mayo scored her second goal of the season 18 minutes into the game, giving the Dukes an early 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the rookie sent a ball to Cydney Stanton, recording her first collegiate assist. Duquesne improved to 5-4-1 (1-0 A-10) and will travel to Saint Louis on Friday, Oct. 11.
