NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure’s Viacheslav Shchukin was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, while Michaela Butler of Massachusetts was selected as the league’s Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. Also honored was St. Bonaventure’s Michael White, who earned Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Meriza Werenski of Massachusetts who earned Women’s Rookie of the Week, the league office announced for meets Oct.7-Oct. 13.
Shchukin, a sophomore from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, recorded two top-three finishes for the Bonnies at the WNY Invite including a first-place finish in the 100-yd freestyle with a time of 44.34. His time in the 100 free currently ranks as the fourth fastest time in the nation. He also recorded a third-place finish in the 100-yd backstroke with a time of 52.14.
Butler, a senior from Dennisport, Mass., won both the one and three-meter boards in record fashion to lead the Minutewomen to their first victory over Boston University since 2005. Butler broke her own pool record with a score of 339.23 in the three-meter springboard, followed by a school and pool record breaking performance in the one-meter with a score of 336.23.
White began his collegiate career and earned Men’s Rookie of the Week honors with a third-place finish in the 200-yd individual medley, touching in at 1.55.89. In the 400-yard IM, the Gilbert, Ariz., native earned a second-place finish with a time of 4:10.50.
Werenski, a freshman from South Hadley, Mass., scored 22 individual points for the Minutewomen as she recorded first-place finishes in both the 1,000-yd freestyle (10:16.44) and the 200-yd individual medley to go along with a second-place finish in the 500-yd freestyle (5:02.13).
