NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Lock Haven’s Nakira and UMass’ Brooke Sabia have been named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Co Players of the Week, while the Minutewomens’ Charlotte Verelst was tabbed as Rookie of the Week.

The LHU offense was sparked by Downes this weekend to scored five of Lock Haven’s eight goals in a pair of conference shutouts. She scored two in the 3-0 shutout on Friday at Saint Joseph and tallied the hat trick in yesterday’s 5-0 shutout of La Salle. Downes, who added an assist in the win over La Salle Sunday for the seven-point game was credited with the game-winning goal in both games.

Sabia recorded 11 points on five goals and an assist to spearhead the Minutewomen offense to a pair of Atlantic 10 victories during the previous week.  Sabia notched five points through a pair of goals and an assist in UMass’ 7-1 rout of La Salle before providing her first collegiate hat trick during the 9-1 Minutewomen victory over Saint Joseph’s . The pair of multi-goal and multi-point performances push her season totals for the category to six and nine, respectively.

Verelst provided three goals during UMass’ two-game weekend slate to help the Minutewomen secure wins over the Explorers and Hawks . Verelst provided what went on to be the game-winner over La Salle – beating the Explorers defense and goalkeeper to do so . She added her first multi-goal game with back-to-back tallies against Saint Joseph’s, recording both unassisted. Her 15 points through four goals and seven assists this season rank Verelst tied for second among all freshmen in the Atlantic 10 for the category.
