NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Massachusetts junior Cady Lalanne has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Nov. 8-10. Fordham freshman Jon Severe and Rhode Island sophomore Ifeanyi Onyekaba shared the league’s Rookie of the Week honors for the same time frame. Both awards were the first of the season for the A-10.
Lalanne had a career-high 27 points in leading UMass to an 86-73 win over Boston College in the season opener on Sunday. The center from Orlando, Fla., who was 12-for-16 (.750) from the field, added 12 rebounds for his seventh career double-double. He was a beast on the offensive glass, pulling down eight boards as he either dunked or laid the ball in on seven of them giving him 14 points on eight offensive rebounds. In the second half alone, he had 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds in 15 minutes. He added three blocks and was 3-of-4 (.750) at the line.
Severe shot a blistering 9-for-15 (.600) from the field, including an even better 7-for-10 (.700) from behind the arc, for his 28 points in Fordham’s win over Saint Francis (Pa.). A guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., he surpassed the former school record for points by a freshman in his college debut of 24 set by Trey Blue in 2008. Severe also added two assists and two rebounds and was 3-of-4 (.750) at the line.
Onyekaba made his college debut with a 21 point-10 rebound performance in the Rams’ season opening win versus Maine. The forward connected on 8-of-10 (.800) from the floor and also sunk five free throws in just 20 minutes of action. Eight of Onyekaba's 10 boards came on the offensive glass. A native of Abuja, Nigeria, he is in his first year of collegiate competition after sitting out last season due to NCAA rules. Onyekaba is the first Rhode Island player in more than 20 years to begin his collegiate career with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.
