THURSDAY game recaps

Duquesne 94, Kent State 63

KENT, Ohio -
Raegan Moore scored a career-high 35 points and set a new school record by recording nine 3-point baskets in Duquesne's 94-63 victory at Kent State on Thursday night. Moore shot an impressive 75 percent (9-of-12) from beyond-the-arc and was 55 percent (11-of-20) overall.

With the win the Dukes improve to 2-1 on the season, while Kent State falls to 1-1.

Belma Nurkic added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting. All 10 players in uniform scored in the game. April Robinson recorded a career-high 11 assists. Wumi Agunbiade had a team-high 7 rebounds.

KSU's Amber Dunlap led the Golden Flashes with 16.

The Dukes started the game off slowly, only making two of their first nine shots and were held without any points until Moore's layup at the 15:46 mark of the 1st half.

With the contest tied at 16-16 with 11:10 remaining in the half, Kent State's Martina Johnson was called for a travel and a technical foul after spiking the ball to the ground. From there, the Dukes went on a 24-4 run over the next 7:30 to take a commanding 40-20 lead with 3:16 remaining. Duquesne's defense did not yield a field goal for the final 6:58 of the half, holding the Golden Flashes to only five foul shots. Duquesne went into halftime leading 47-25, 19 of the points came from Moore.

The closest Kent State would come in the second half was 16 points when CiCi Shannon's layup made the score 58-42 with 12:01 to play. Moore answered with her sixth 3-pointer seven seconds later which started a 19-8 run over the six minutes. The rally was capped by Moore's eighth's 3-pointer which her set a new career-high and made the score 77-50.

Moore's recorded her record-setting ninth 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining in the game. The Dukes called timeout as Moore checked out of the game to a standing ovation.

As a team, Duquesne finished 31-of-64 (48.4 percent) from the floor and 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from 3-point range. The Dukes out-rebounded the Golden Flashes 39-26 and scored 29 points off turnovers to KSU's eight.

Duquesne hosts defending Horizon League champion Green Bay on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

George Mason 82, Utah Valley 64
George Mason (2-1) opened up its home season with a big 82-64 win over Utah Valley (1-2) in the Patriots home opener on Thursday behind a career night from fifth-year senior Janaa Pickard.

Pickard, a Philadelphia native, set a new Patriot Center record with a career-high 21 rebounds along with a career-high 21 points. As a team, Mason out-rebounded the Wolverines 53-36 leading to 27 second-chance points.

Senior Kyana Jacobs gave Mason a 4-2 lead in the first minute of play and the Patriots held on from there. Jacobs would end the night with 13 points, while sophomore Taylor Brown registered 17 points.

The win wasn’t without adversity. Mason weathered a 12-2 Wolverine run in the middle of the first half. However, Mason would take a 56-34 lead into the break shooting a season high 50-percent from the field, going 7-for-13 from behind the arc.

OHIO STATE 83, VCU 71
Senior Darryce Moore scored a career-high 20 points on 9 of 9 shooting and notched her second consecutive double-double with 10 rebounds to lead Ohio State to an 83-71 win over visiting VCU Thursday night in front of 4,254 fans at Value City Arena.

The win improves Ohio State to 3-0 on the season while VCU falls to 1-1.

Senior Robyn Parks led all scorers with a game-high 26 points and helped fuel a furious second half rally but VCU came up short.

Trailing by 19 with less than seven minutes to play, the Rams used an 18-4 run spanning nearly five minutes and pulled within 76-71 on a 3-pointer by sophomore Jessica Pellechio with 1:59 left.  However, it was as close as VCU could get as Ohio State went 7-of-10 from the free throw line to close the game.
