UMassí Williams, SJUís Bembry Claim Menís Basketball Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Massachusetts senior Chaz Williams has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Saint Joseph’s freshman DeAndre’ Bembry earned the league’s Rookie of the Week award. Both awards were announced Monday for games played Nov. 11-17.
Williams averaged a double-double with 21.5 points and 10 assists in UMass’ wins over LSU and previously unbeaten Youngstown State (4-0 prior to Sunday). He netted a team-high 24 points, nine assists and three rebounds in the game with the Tigers, contributing 17 points and five assists in the first half alone. The senior guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., followed that on Sunday against the Penguins and had a game-high 19 points and 11 assists for his first double-double of the year and 12th of his career. He has scored at least 19 points in all three games and averaged eight assists thus far.
Bembry scored a team-high 20 points in the Hawks’ last-minute loss to Creighton. The forward from Charlotte, N.C. shot 8-for-14 from the field and 4-for-8 from three-point range while handing out four assists against the Blue Jays. He tallied 14 points in the second half as the Hawks came back from a seven-point deficit to take the lead with 27 seconds left. Bembry also scored nine points on 4-for-8 shooting with two assists and two steals in win over Marist.
Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor RollKhari Price averaged 13.5 points to lead Dayton to a pair of wins, registering his second and third double-digit scoring effort this season … Fordham’s Branden Frazier scored a career-high 33 points in a loss to No. 9 Syracuse and had a career-high 11 rebounds versus Lehigh, totaling 28.5 points per game last week … Frazier’s freshman teammate Jon Severe set the Fordham record for most points scored by a freshman in his first three games as a Ram, averaging 17.5 points per game last week … Sherrod Wright had 36 points last week, including 23 against a strong Northern Iowa team in a win for George Mason … Mason freshman Marquise Moore was 4-of-8 from the field last week with five assists to help the Patriots get a pair of wins … George Washington’s Maurice Creek averaged 23 points and shot 58.3 percent from the field to get a pair of wins for GW, including a road win at Manhattan where he scored 27 points … La Salle senior Tyreek Duren dished out six assists against Quinnipiac and then scored 14 points in the final 7:37 of the game to spur La Salle to a win over Siena … Rhode Island freshman E.C. Matthews led the Rams in scoring in both games last week, scoring 15 points in the loss at SMU and 18 in the win over North Carolina A&T … Matthew Wright scored 27 points against Canisius in a rivalry game for St. Bonaventure and had 10 rebounds versus Abilene Christian … Mike McCall, Jr. was 6-of-8 from the field against SIU Edwardsville and averaged 16.5 points in helping lead Saint Louis to back-to-back non-conference road wins for the first time since the 1997-98 season … VCU’s Treveon Graham had the first double-double of the season for any VCU player with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Winthrop, but his biggest contribution last week was a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left at Virginia.
