VCU's Kriskova Earns All-Region Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – Her incredible season may be over, but awards are still rolling in for VCU sophomore Romana Kriskova. On Tuesday, Kriskova was named to the AVCA All-East Region Team.

Kriskova, the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year, is just the second player in program history to earn an All-Region honor, following Martina Samadan last season. Two others, Ludmila Francescatto (2005, 2006) and Michala Kvapilova (2009) garnered All-Region Honorable Mention previously.

This season, Kriskova moved from right side to outside hitter and became the focal point of first-year coach Jody Rogers up-tempo offense. The results were historic.

Kriskova averaged 4.83 kills per set, which ranked fifth nationally and shattered the previous record of 4.46, set by Francescatto in 2006. Her 623 kills this season also surpassed Francescatto's program best of 549. Kriskova hit .269 and served up an A-10 leading 50 aces. Her 78 blocks were fourth-most on the team. She ranked fourth in the country in points per set (5.57). She also moved into 10th place on VCU's career kills list (884).

In 34 matches in 2013, Kriskova failed to record double-digit kills just once. She topped 20 kills 12 times, and her 29 kills on Oct. 22 in a win over William & Mary were the most by a Ram since 2007. The 6-foot-3 veteran of the Slovakian National Team ripped a match-high 21 kills in the A-10 Championship Match Nov. 24 in Washington, D.C. For her efforts, she was named to the A-10 All-Tournament Team.

Kriskova was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week five times during the season, and she was selected to the All-Tournament Team at all four of the Rams' non-conference tournaments. Kriskova was named MVP of the season-opening IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The sophomore led VCU to a five-set win at Tennessee on Sept. 14 – the program's first victory over an SEC foe – with 28 kills and 33.5 points, the most by a Ram since 2002.

Behind its star outside hitter, VCU finished 26-8 this season and reached the A-10 Championship Match.
