Rhode Island Sweeps Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Rhode Island senior Xavier Munford has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and his freshman teammate E.C. Matthews has earned the league’s Rookie of the Week award. Both awards were announced Monday for games played Dec. 30 – Jan. 5.

Munford averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks in a pair of road wins for Rhode Island.  The senior captain connected on 10-of-12 from the charity stripe over the two games - good for 83.3 percent.  A guard from Hillside, N.J., Munford lifted the Rams to their first true road victory of the season, pouring in a game-high 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor at Brown.  He also added five rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal in 38 minutes. He followed that with a big road win at LSU with 17 points - 13 of which came in the second half, as the Rams held off a late charge by the Tigers.  Munford, who had six rebounds in the win also had a solid defensive effort at LSU, tallying two blocks and two steals.

Matthews keyed the Rams to a 2-0 week, averaging 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks while shooting 54.2 percent from the floor (13-24), 71.4 percent from beyond the arc (5-7), and 78.6 percent from the foul line (11-14).  The guard from Romulus, Mich., had a career-high 21 points at Brown, connecting on 7-of-12 shots - including 3-of-4 from the perimeter.  He grabbed five rebounds, while recording two assists, two blocked shots, and three steals in 38 minutes of play.  He matched his career-high in scoring at LSU, with 21 points against the Tigers.  Matthews was 6-12 from the floor, 2-3 from 3-point land, and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.  He pulled down a career-best nine rebounds and dished out four assists in 36 minutes of action.

Devin Oliver had a phenomenal game in Dayton’s 83-80 overtime win at Ole Miss with 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting, while adding seven rebounds and five assists … UD freshman Scoochie Smith also had a career day at Mississippi, tallying 11 points on 3-of-5 from 3-point range … Ovie Soko scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Duquesne’s win against Appalachian State … Bryon Allen, who was a perfect 17-for-17 at the line, averaged 21 points last week for George Mason, scoring 24 points against Penn and 18 versus Old Dominion … George Washington’s Kethan Savage led the Colonials to a win over Georgia with 18 points and six rebounds after scoring 14 points at Kansas State … Jerrell Wright was nearly perfect in a Big 5 win for La Salle, hitting 8of-9 from the field to lead the Explorers with 21 points … Chaz Williams had 18 points, eight assists and three steals in a win over Miami (Ohio) to keep UMass rolling … Cedrick Lindsay scored 19 points in Richmond’s loss at No. 12/13 Florida and 18 points in a win over Northeastern … Matthew Wright tallied his fourth 20-plus points game of the year with 23 in a St. Bonaventure win over Delaware, followed by 16 points against Cornell in a game in which he also dished our six assists … Saint Joseph’s Langston Galloway scored 20 points in 25 minutes against Binghamton and 14 points versus Denver to give SJU its fifth straight win … Rob Loe had a career-high 19 points in Saint Louis’ win over Yale with three rebounds, three blocks and two assists … VCU’s Briante Weber filled out the box score in the Rams’ win over Stony Brook, scoring 14 points with nine assists, seven steals and three rebounds.
