VCUs Parks Nabs Fourth Player of the Week Award, GWs Washington Garners Second Rookie Honor

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU’s Robyn Parks has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, while George Washington’s Caira Washington was tabbed as Rookie of the Week for the second time this year.  The awards were announced Monday for games played between Dec. 30 – Jan. 5.

Parks averaged 26.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in VCU’s perfect 3-0 week, including a 2-0 start to A-10 play. The Waldorf, Md. native shot 59.6 percent (34-of-57) from the field and hit 4-of-9 from 3-point range.  Parks has logged 10 straight 20-point outings, while helping the Rams extend their school-record winning streak to 13 games en route to their best start in school history at 14-1.  Parks began the week with 27 points and 11 rebounds against Old Dominion before adding 22 points in a season-low 26 minutes against UMass, and 31 points, nine boards and two steals at Duquesne.

Washington averaged a double-double of 14.3 points – a team high – and 11.0 rebounds per game and added 2.0 blocks and 1.7 steals per contest in three wins. She shot 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the floor, and 18 of her 34 offensive rebounds came on the defensive glass – an average of 6.0 offensive boards per game. The freshman from Brandywine, Md., posted a double-double in all three contests and now has five on the season. Washington scored a career-high 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, in GW’s rout of Bluefield State on New Year’s Eve, then followed with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, 12 rebounds, four blocks and three steals in the Colonials’ A-10 opener against George Mason. She finished the week with 11 points and 10 rebounds as GW knocked off Saint Joseph’s to push its win streak to seven.

Fordham ‘s Erin Rooney secured MVP honors in the Fordham Holiday Classic on Monday, scoring 19 points and grabbing four boards in the championship game victory over Harvard.,  She then tallied her fifth double-double of the year, tallying 21 points and tying a career-high with 12 rebounds against Saint Louis …  Duquesne’s  Wumi Agunbiade scored 16 points in the Dukes  73-65 win over St. Bonaventure on New Year’s Day and moved into 4th place all-time on Duquesne’s scoring list. Her teammate Amadea Szamosi scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the first-half of the win over SBU … Jonquel Jones averaged a double-double of 14.0 points and a team-high 12.3 rebounds per game and added 2.0 blocks and 2.0 assists per contest in three George Washington wins … La Salle’s Micahya Owens averaged 15.0 ppg on the week, her teammate Leeza Burdgess averaged a double-double of 13.0 ppg and 13.3 rpg. …  Ilze Gotfrida of Saint Joseph’s averaged 12 ppg and 8.5 rpg in helping SJU to a 1-1 mark and had her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds at Richmond …  VCU’s Keira Robinson averaged 13.7 points, 6.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals in three games last week .
