Shields, Washington Nab A-10 Women’s Basketball Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph’s Erin Shields has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while George Washington’s Caira Washington earned Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season.
A senior guard from Drexel Hill, Pa., Shields averaged 25.5 points per game and shot 55.6 percent overall (15-of-27) and 61.1 percent from three-point range (11-of-18). At home Wednesday versus La Salle, Shields tallied a game-high 22 points and added three rebounds and an assist. On Saturday facing Atlantic 10 newcomer George Mason, Shields posted a career-best 29 points, hitting 8-of-13 from the floor, including 7-of-11 from behind the arc and 6-of-7 from the foul line. She also added five assists and a steal in 36 minutes of play versus the Patriots.
Washington led GW to wins over VCU and Massachusetts with 19.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game, shooting 73.9 percent from the floor (17-23). She recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Colonials’ 80-62 win over VCU on Thursday, making 7-of-9 field goals and adding four blocks and two assists. Washington followed up with a career day against UMass on Saturday, posting her ninth double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds, including six offensive boards. She made 10-of-14 shots in the 78-54 victory over the Minutewomen as the Colonials improved to 9-4 in A-10 play and moved into a tie for third place in the league standings. The rookie from Brandywine, Md., is averaging 11.9 points and 9.2 rebounds on the season.
A-10 Honor Roll
Dayton’s Andrea Hoover averaged 18 points per game this week, while her teammate Celeste Edwards averaged 17.5 ppg., including a 25 point performance against Richmond … Erin Rooney of Fordham scored 22 points in 50 minutes against Richmond, then followed that with a 21 point effort against La Salle … Richmond rookie Janelle Hubbard scored a career-high 29 points, including the game-winning bucket in a double overtime win over Fordham … Katie Healy of St. Bonaventure scored 26 points and grabbed four rebounds in SBU’s win over Duquesne … Saint Louis’ Desirae Ball scored 17 points and dished out a career-high seven assists in SLU’s win over St. Bonaventure, while fellow Billiken Erin Nelson scored 14 points against SBU … VCU rookie Keira Robinson averaged 12 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Rams this week.
