Newport News, Va. – Massachusetts’ Sam Rush has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, while George Washington’s Mackenzie Jones and Michaela Lynch were named Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Rush led UMass to a 9-8 win at Richmond on Saturday in the lone game of the week for both teams. The win gave the Minutewomen outright possession of first place and secured a spot in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament. Rush led all players in the game with three goals, including the game-winner, while adding two caused turnovers, a draw control and a groundball. Rush was held scoreless in the first half, but was key in the second.  After Richmond started the second half with a three-goal run to take a 6-3 lead, Rush scored twice as part of a four-goal UMass run to take a 7-6 lead with 23 minutes to go. After the game was tied at 8-8 with 10 minutes to go, Rush was able to get free to score the game-winning goal with 3:27 remaining.

Jones matched her career-high with 11 saves in GW’s 14-7 win over George Mason at home on Friday. She allowed seven goals in 23 shots faced for a .611 save percentage and made 10 saves in the second half alone.

Lynch scored two goals and dished out two assists for a four-point game in GW’s win over George Mason on Friday. She found the back of the net twice on four shots, all of which were on goal. She also won three draw controls, caused two turnovers and picked up two groundballs in the victory.
