Newport News, Va. – Fordham’s Tim Swatek has been named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week. Saint Louis’ James Norwood and George Mason’s Anthony Montefusco shared Pitcher of the Week honors and Fordham hurler Kirk Haynes was tabbed as Rookie of the Week.
Swatek was an all-round threat this weekend at St. Bonaventure. He hit .667 for the weekend (8-12) with four runs scored, a double, two triples, and four RBI. He also finished with four walks, three stolen bases, and a .750 on-base percentage. On Saturday, he was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three extra-base hits, which included two triples. He followed with his first career four-hit game on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. He also pitched five shutout innings on Sunday to post his team-leading fourth win of the season.
Norwood stifled one of the top offenses in the league in his start on Friday. He threw a complete-game two-hitter without allowing an earned run against the Richmond Spiders. Norwood had six strikeouts and one walk. Over the entire game, the Spiders were only able to get five base runners (two via errors). Norwood held opposing hitters to a .069 average.
Montefusco pitched eight shutout innings in a 5-0 win on Friday over Rhode Island. He struck out seven, did not allow a free pass and allowed only two hits. Montefusco now has 57 strikeouts and only nine walks this season. His ERA drops to an A-10 low 1.04.
In his first A-10 start of the year, Haynes was outstanding against St. Bonaventure. He threw a season-high 8.1 innings, allowing just one run on four hits to earn his second win of the season. He also tied a season-high with nine strikeouts.
