Richmond, Va.  – Top-seeded Massachusetts captured its sixth consecutive Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Championship with a 10-6 victory over second-seeded Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Robins Stadium on the campus of UR.

With the win, UMass improves to 18-1 and earns the A-10’s automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.  Selections will be announced on Sunday evening at 9:00 p.m. on NCAA.com. Richmond finishes its season 11-7 overall.

Richmond got on the board just 53 seconds into the game when Emily Doyle scored an unassisted goal. Brooke Wilson doubled the Spider lead at the 26:27 mark with an unassisted strike that made it 2-0 UR.

Erika Eipp got UMass on the board at 24:32 to make it 2-1, before Richmond’s Charlett Stevenson converted a free-position attempt to make it 3-1 Spiders with 22 minutes to play in the half.

With Richmond leading 4-2, Tanner Guarino scored to cut the UMass deficit to 4-3 and spark what proved to be a three goal run by the Minutewomen to close the opening half.  The run was capped by Melissa Carelli scoring on a feed from Sam Rush to make it 5-4.

UMass scored the first two goals of the second half, getting tallies from Rush and Ferris  that made it 7-4 with 16:18 go in the game.

Doyle struck with just under 13 minutes to go to make the score 7-5, but that would be as close as the Spiders would get as Rush and Carelli scored back to back goals to push UMass in front 9-5 and seal the game.

Ferris, who was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player, finished Sunday’s game with two goals and four assists. Carelli joined Ferris on the All-Championship team after scoring three goals Sunday, while fellow All-Championship team member Rush finished the game with two goals and an assist.

Rachel Vallarelli made three saves for the Minutewomen, earning All-Championship Team honors as well.

Doyle and Wilson each scored a pair of goals for the Spiders, while Emily Boyce made nine saves in the cage for UR. The trio were all named to the All-Championship Team along with their teammate Bailey Zeer .
