Bronx, N.Y. – Fourth-seeded Massachusetts scored six runs with two outs in a decisive sixth inning as UMass rallied past fifth-seeded Dayton in the opening game of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.

With the win, UMass improves to 16-20-1 overall and the Minutewomen advance to Thursday’s first game where it will take on top-seeded and host Fordham at Noon.  Dayton will be forced to turn around and play at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday against the loser of Saint Joseph’s and La Sallle.

With the game knotted at 1-1, Dayton broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning when the Flyers Tiffany Ricks hit a towering homerun to make it 2-1 UD.

After Dayton reliever Emily Froment retired the first two batters in the home-half of the sixth inning, the Minutewomen then saw their bats come alive h with six of their nine hits coming in their final plate appearance.

After Bridget Lemire was sacrificed to second by Tiffany Meeks, Taylor Carbone singled to left to put runners on the corners. Ashton Wince went down looking for the second out setting up Zenk's clutch at-bat. She put a one-strike offering off the wall in left center that scored both runners and placed her on third after an errant throw home.

Cote Clark followed with an infield single that scored Zenk and extended the lead to 4-2. A Cozza infield single deep in the hole at short allowed Clark to score and moved Diaz-Patterson - who had singled - to third. Lindsey Webster capped off the inning with an opposite field double to right that scored Diaz-Patterson and Cozza for a 7-2 lead.

Caroline Raymond (10-11) went the distance allowing five hits and two runs, while walking two. Froment (1-5) took the loss after going three innings and allowing three earned runs.
