SJU's Forgey, Carter, Hamburg Highlight A-10 Baseball All-Conference Awards

Newport News, Va. – Saint Joseph’s Collin Forgey has been named the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Year, as the league announced its yearly awards on Tuesday.

Forgey’s teammate Jordan Carter was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Year, while SJU skipper Fritz Hamburg was tabbed as Coach of Year honors. Massachusetts’ Mike Geannelis was named Rookie of the Year.

Forgey currently ranks third in the A-10 in batting with a .368 average, while his .561 slugging percentage is good for third in the league as well.  Forgey also ranks fourth in the A-10 in hits (68), runs scored (46) and (41).  A two-time A-10 Player of the Week, Forgey had five game-winning or tying hits.  Forgey was also named to the league’s All-Academic Team.

A senior right-hander, Carter led the A-10 in wins with 10 overall and seven in A-10 play. Carter ranks fourth in ERA at 2.19. Opponents hit just .211 against Carter, who logged 90.1 innings on the mound and recorded 75 strikeouts, tied for second best in the A-10.

Geannelis had a successful first season in Amherst at the plate and on the mound. The right-hander was a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week and recorded four victories on the mound in league play.  Geannelis also hit .347 on the season, including .385 in A-10 games.

Hamburg earns his first A-10 Coach of the Year honor after leading Saint Joseph’s to a school record 33 overall wins and a program best 18 A-10 victories. SJU earned the second-seed in this week’s Atlantic 10 Championship and will.

Crosstown rivals VCU and Richmond will open the seven-team Championship on Wednesday. First pitch of game one is slated for 10:00 a.m., with the winner moving on to play top-seed Saint Louis at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. SJU and Fordham will meet at 1:30 p.m. in game two, while George Mason and Dayton will square off in game three at 5:00 p.m.  Wednesday’s nightcap will feature the losers of games two and three in an elimination contest starting at 8:30 p.m. All game times are Central Standard Time.
