McGlade to Receive NACWAA Administrator of the Year Award Tuesday

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade has been named a 2014 Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA).

The Administrator of the Year Award is presented annually to NACWAA members for significant contributions made as athletics administrators. The eight honorees, which were announced in July, were nominated by their peers and selected by the NACWAA Awards Committee for their service during 2013-14.

Entering her seventh year as A-10 Commissioner, McGlade will be recognized along with her fellow honorees today in Louisville, Ky., at the 2014 Administrator of the Year Luncheon in conjunction with the 35th Annual NACWAA National Convention.

McGlade earns the honor following one of the most prolific years in league history, with 13 basketball teams earning postseason bids, including a record six men’s basketball teams making the NCAA Championship. The A-10’s success on the court was complimented by multiple NCAA bids in men’s soccer, while 11 A-10 student-athletes earned individual bids.

In March, McGlade announced that the A-10 will continue to hold its Men’s Basketball Championship at Barclays Center in 2015 and 2016 and secured an extension for 2019, 2020 and 2021. The agreement was in partnership with the ACC and Barclays Center which will result in a series of inter-conference doubleheaders in Brooklyn starting in 2015, while A-10 teams will participate in the annual BROOKLYN HOOPS™ events.

In the classroom, the league ranks fifth among all conferences in the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and fifth in the Academic Progress Rate (APR). It was also announced in May that the A-10 had 58 of its teams earn national recognition from the NCAA in the Academic Progress Rate (APR). The 58 programs, which are the most for the A-10 since 2010, ranked in the top 10 percent of their respective sports in APR scores compiled through the 2012-13 academic year. The Atlantic 10 set a record for the highest average of student-athletes honored on its bi-annual Commissioner’s Honor Roll, with 1,340 total honorees, an average of 103 per institution for the 2014 spring semester. In all, 2,653 student-athletes were honored with the distinction during the 2013-14 year.

The A-10 also embarked on its first ever national branding initiative when it launched its “Next” campaign in February. The campaign used A-10 media partners and social media platforms to leverage the conference's basketball-centric identity and communicate its members’ core values of academic and athletic excellence, leadership success and community service. The campaign included a unique two-minute video “Who Wants Next?” which aired nationally and has made the CLIO Sports Awards shortlist for national recognition to be awarded in New York City this week.

Named the fifth full-time commissioner of the A-10 on June 2, 2008, McGlade in unison with the Council of Presidents and Directors of Athletics, began working to shape the image and branding of the league and further position the A-10 as one of the top 10 Division I conferences in the country. McGlade quickly embraced the pride and commitment of each institution, and enthusiastically announced in March 2009, that the finals of the Men's Basketball Championship would be aired nationally on CBS on Selection Sunday for the first time in league history, beginning in 2010. She worked to strengthen an already close relationship with the conference television partners, CBS College Sports and ESPN. Then in 2012 McGlade forged a new media rights package that enhanced those existing partnerships and added NBC Sports Network as a third national television partner, quadrupling the conference’s media rights fees.

McGlade led the conference through the development of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted by the Presidents’ Council in November of 2010. Highlighting four areas of emphasis: Conference Membership, Student-Athlete Experience, Competitive Operating Standards and Conference Revenue Resources and Distribution, the conference has a clear road map for the future supported by the mission of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
