GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Rhode Island finished 21st out of 22 schools at the NCAA Rowing Championship, which concluded Sunday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
Rhody's Varsity 8 boat of Alissa Margraf (cox), Lily Herberger, Dana Holland, Katie Shattuck, Alicia Kelley, Emily Engott, Kiana Anderson and Kelsey Maymon placed 20th in its flight. The Rams hung tight with heat winner Central Florida, trialing by just 2.2 seconds at the midpoint of the race. UCF pulled away in the second half of the race to beat the field by nearly eight seconds. Rhody was six seconds ahead of Navy, which was followed by Jacksonville.
The Rams placed 21st in the Second Varsity 8 flight. Rhody's contingent of Carly Amurao (cox), Danielle Wolf, Eva Baker, Courtney Harrington, Mekenzie Mattheson, Shannon McIsaac, Laura Kilbane, Sydney Beck, and Meghan Ellis turned in a time of 6:54.628, getting beat by just 1.3 seconds by UCF. Rhode Island finished well ahead of Jacksonville. Navy won the flight in 6:49.852, beating the field by 4.5 seconds.
In the Varsity 4, the team of Avery Cohen (cox), Lauren Smith, Allie Reilly, Sage Iacovazzi and Aoife O'Keeffe placed 20th in its flight. Racing against Gonzaga, Central Florida and Jacksonville in the Fours D Final on Sunday, the Rams finished second in a time of 7:50.444, edging UCF by 1.34 seconds. Gonzaga won the heat in a time of 7:38.233.
California won the national title with 129 points, followed by Ohio State with 126. Virginia (112), Stanford (107) and Washington (106) rounded out the top five schools.
