NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Louis’ Ryan McCoy was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week while teammate Mina Glenesk and Richmond’s Irina Chiulli were named the Women’s Co-Performer of the Week. Also honored was Saint Louis freshman Collin O’Brien, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week and George Washington freshman Jackie Torrez who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held Nov. 14-20.
McCoy excelled in the TYR Invitational at Northwestern. The swimmer earned an NCAA B Cut in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.74. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., finished fourth in the 500 freestyle and second in the 100 butterfly. McCoy's 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle times from this weekend are the top times in the A-10 this season.
Glenesk paced the Billikens at the TYR Invitational. The junior placed third in the 500 freestyle (4:53.76), fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:52.29) and seventh in the 1650 freestyle (17:05.15). Glenesk broke school records in the 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. The junior from Austin, Texas is ranked first in the A-10 in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events.
Chiulli continued to shine on the spring board during the Patriot Invitational. The senior won both the 3M prelim and final with another NCAA Zone Qualifying mark during the prelims with a score of 296.65, which is a season best thus far. The diver from Westwood, Mass., bested the competition in the 3M by nearly 40 points. Chiulli closed out the diving portion of the Patriot Invitational by winning the 1M event, as she won both the prelims (244.05) and the finals (257.70). In the 1M she bested the field by 28.5 points.
O'Brien was SLU's top freshman at the TYR Invitational at Northwestern. The freshman from Edwards, Ill., had top-eight finishes in the 50 breaststroke, 200 freestyle (1:41.05), 100 breaststroke (57.04) and 200 IM (1:51.77). O'Brien's 200 IM time is ranked first in the A-10 this season.
Torrez posted a stellar weekend for the Colonials at the Magnus Cup Invitational, tallying five top-10 finishes to lead the Colonials to a sixth-place finish out of 14 teams. The rookie’s best performances came in the 400 IM (4:24.95) and 200 butterfly (2:04.08) when Torrez took fourth in both events. The freshman from Whittier, Calif., notched a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:05.44) and 200 breaststroke (2:20.94). Torrez rounded out her weekend with a 10th-place finish in the 100 breast (1:05.73). Torrez broke into GW's all-time top-10 list in each of those five events.
