RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Men’s Soccer defender Dakota Barnathan was selected with the 59th overall pick, the 15th pick in the third round, by FC Dallas in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon.
Barnathan joins Dennis Castillo (Colorado Rapids, 2016) and Kharlton Belmar (Portland Timbers, 2015), making it three years in a row that VCU has had a selection on draft day, and fourth in the last five years dating back to Jason Johnson when he went 13th overall to the Houston Dynamo in 2013.
“We are excited for Dakota as he begins his career as a professional player by being selected by FC Dallas in the third round,” said Head Men’s Soccer Coach, David Giffard. “His ability to play out of the back was, I’m sure, a big factor in what was appealing to him to one of the teams in the league who values that quality the most.”
The Massapequa, New York native was stellar in his four-year career at VCU. The redshirt senior helped guide the Rams to two consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Championship games in 2015 and 2016, while earning All-Tournament recognition in his senior season. Barnathan was also an A-10 All-Rookie selection in 2013, and earned A-10 First Team honors in 2016.
Barnathan concluded his VCU career totaling nine goals and eight assists for 26 points. He finished the 2016 campaign with three goals and four assists, totaling 10 points. He notched his only career game-winning goal in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals against the University of Dayton in 2016, lifting the Rams to a 1-0 victory, sending them to the A-10 Championship game.
