NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Dayton senior Nick Paxson and VCU senior Jamie Clare earned Atlantic 10 Co-Golfers of the Week the league announced Friday. George Washington freshman Yoo Jin Kim was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, the first of the spring season, were for rounds played in A-10 Match Play, which concluded earlier in the week.
Paxson helped lead Dayton to a tiebreaking win at A-10 Match Play. He won all three of his matches and was never once down to an opponent. Paxson, a Cincinnati native, made a total of 19 birdies out of 54 holes. Paxson defeated Michael O'Brien (Saint Joseph’s) 4&3 in the first round, Logan Lowe (George Washington) 2&1 in round two and Hanish Nagrani (VCU), 3&2 in the championship match.
Clare also went 3-0 to propel the Rams into the championship match for the second straight year. A product of Burnham on Sea, Somerset, England, Clare defeated Patrick Sheerer (St. Bonaventure), 4&3 in the first round, Ricky Hendler (Florida Atlantic) 2UP in round two and Caleb Wolters (Dayton), 3&1 in the championship match.
Playing in his first Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship, Yoo Jin Kim helped GW to a third-place finish by going 2-1 with head-to-head victories over golfers from George Mason and Florida Atlantic. The Centreville, Va., native first took a 5&4 victory versus George Mason, and then closed with a 3&2 win against Florida Atlantic to help GW claim third place. Kim led GW in birdies in the event, making 16 in 54 holes, including six apiece in his two wins.
