How it Happened
For the second time in the program's last 11 games, Rhode Island (4-4) has knocked off the nation's sixth-ranked team, defeating NC State 5-2 this afternoon in Raleigh. The Rams did not trail at any point in the game.
URI got on the board first, scoring twice with two away in the top of the second. Matt O'Neil drew an eight-pitch walk to start the two-out rally before scoring from first on a double by Mike Corin. Jordan Powell then sent the first pitch he saw into left field to plate Corin and put Rhody on top 2-0.
After going down in order in the second, No. 6 NC State (5-4) cut the Rams' lead in half in the bottom of the third, thanks to a solo shot by Josh McLain.
Rhode Island pushed its lead to four in the top of the sixth however, thanks to a three-run homer by Corin. Also scoring on the play were Martin Figueroa - who had doubled down the left field line - and Matt O'Neil, who was walked with two away.
An RBI triple by NC State's Joe Dunand made it a 5-2 game in the bottom of the sixth but that was as close as the Wolfpack would get.
In the bottom of the seventh, Vitaly Jangols came on in relief of Tyler Wilson, who had cruised through six frames on just 78 pitches. Jangols retired the side in order in the seventh and followed with a scoreless eighth and ninth to seal the upset victory for the Rams.
