NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Louis junior Carter Hanford was selected as the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week and Rhode Island junior Tyler Wilson was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week. Rhode Island freshman Vitaly Jangols was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The three awards were announced Monday and are for games played Feb. 27 – Mar. 5
Hanford powered the SLU offense over four games last week. The Maryland Heights, Mo., native was 5-for-12 over the week with six runs, four RBI, two doubles and a home run. Hanford hit .417 with a .588 on-base percentage and a .833 slugging percentage. Hanford helped lead the Billikens to a win over No. 14 Oklahoma State on Wednesday with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and two walks. He has reached base safely in eight consecutive contests and has five multi-hit games this season.
Wilson picked up the win in URI's 5-2 victory at #6 NC State Friday afternoon. The Palmer, Mass. product allowed just two runs on five hits over six complete frames en route to his first win of the season. He recorded a trio of 1-2-3 innings - in the second, fourth and fifth - while holding the nationally-ranked Wolfpack to a season-low two runs. In his last four starts dating back to last season, Wilson has now led the Rams to a pair of road wins against the country's sixth-ranked team as he also earned the win at #6 South Carolina during the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Jangols relieved Wilson and earned the nine-out save against the sixth-ranked Wolfpack, surrendering just one hit over the final three innings to earn rookie honors. He entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and retired the first two hitters he faced - on one pitch each - before getting an inning-ending strikeout. The Tuxedo Park, N.Y. native followed with a scoreless eighth and ninth to seal the upset win for the Rams. In three appearances so far this season, Jangols is 1-0 with a pair of saves.
