NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —George Mason junior Eric Edwards was selected as the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week. VCU freshman Alister Balcombe was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Friday and are for events played Mar. 1-22.

Edwards recorded a stroke average of 71.5 across two tournaments, finishing tied for fifth at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, and tied for 12th at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Edwards finished the Seminole Intercollegiate with a 7-under 209 (72-71-66) and moved up 17 spots on the final day. He shot a 6-under 66 on the final day to match the lowest round of the tournament as only seven golfers carded the score over the weekend. Edwards, a native of Salisbury, N.C., played bogey-free golf in the final round, sunk two eagles and birdied twice over his last 18 holes. At the Mission Inn, he finished with a 220 (77-70-73), helping Mason to a third-place finish.

Balcombe, a native of Cleyeton, England, recorded his second top-10 finish, as well as his two lowest rounds, since joining the Rams. He finished tied for eighth at the Seminole Intercollegiate, including two rounds at a five-under par 67. Balcombe carded a 208 (67-74-67) across the three rounds, a stroke average of 69.3.

In addition to the two weekly honorees, two other Atlantic 10 golfers won their respective tournaments over the last two weeks. George Washington’s Logan Lowe, a native of Grass Valley, Calif., won the Bash at the Beach Invitational, shooting a 213 (73-71-69). La Salle’s P.J. Acierno of Flourtown, Pa., also won his tournament, shooting a 220 (77-71-72) to finish first at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate.
