NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —Rhode Island senior Mike Corin was selected as the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week and VCU junior Sean Thompson was chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week. Fordham freshman Alvin Melendez and VCU freshman Paul Witt shared the A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week award. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Mar. 20-26.
Corin powered the Rams' offense in a 4-0 week that included a three-game sweep at Davidson. He began the week with a double, walk and run scored in Tuesday's non-conference win over Sacred Heart. The North Providence, R.I., native then combined to hit .500 (6-for-12) in three games at Davidson, including a pair of home runs. His first homer was a two-run, game-winning shot in the top of the ninth that led to Saturday's 7-6 victory. His second was a first-inning grand slam in Sunday's finale. Corin, an outfielder, slugged 1.083 and had a .600 on-base percentage against the Wildcats. Overall for the week he was 7-for-15 (.467) with seven RBI, five runs scored, two home runs, two doubles and two walks.
Thompson led VCU to a series-opening victory over La Salle Friday night with a 13-strikeout complete game performance. The right-hander from Indiana, Pa., gave up seven hits, only one run, and did not walk any La Salle batters. He picked up the win, his team-high fourth victory of the season.
Melendez allowed just two hits over six innings of relief in two appearances this week. The right-hander from Whitestone, N.Y., earned his first collegiate win on Sunday at George Mason, throwing five innings of one-hit relief with a season-high five strikeouts. He also made a one-inning appearance against Iona, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
Witt, an infielder from Harper’s Ferry, W.Va., hit .412 on the week in four games, collecting seven hits in 17 at bats with six RBI and a run scored. He also added a double and a walk as well in helping the Rams to a perfect 4-0 week.
