NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —George Mason junior Eric Edwards and Rhode Island graduate student Chris Houston shared the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week honors. Fordham freshman Tomas Nieves was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Friday and are for events played March 30 – April 5.
Edwards, a Salisbury, N.C., product, tied for second at the Wofford Invitational on Tuesday in Spartanburg, S.C. Edwards shot a 6-under-par 138 (68-70) over 36 holes at the rain-shortened tournament, which was originally scheduled to be 54 holes. Edwards shot 4-under during the opening round, which started Monday and ended Tuesday morning, due to the rain. For the tournament, he sank 11 birdies and made two eagles. It was his third top-five finish of the season and fourth time inside the top 10.
A graduate transfer from Gilford, N.H., Houston was the individual medalist at the Manor Intercollegiate, helping lead Rhode Island to the team title as well. He carded a 1-under 71 in all three rounds to finish in a tie for first place. Houston went on to birdie the first playoff hole to win the individual title, his second individual title of the season as he also claimed top honors and led URI to a first-place finish at the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge.
Nieves had a strong showing at the Coca-Cola Lehigh Invitational. Competing as an individual, the Miami, Fla., native fired rounds of 76-77 for a two-day total of 153, placing him in a tie for 27th at the Silver Creek Country Club.
