Salt Lake City, Utah – The Fordham softball team fell to nationally-ranked Utah, 10-0, in five innings on Thursday night in the team's opening game of this year's NCAA Regionals. The Rams committed four errors and it led to six unearned runs against Fordham pitching. With the loss, the Rams fall to 45-16 on the year and will play Mississippi State in the first elimination game on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

The Utes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back in the second-ever meeting between the two schools and the first since 2007.

The Utes strung together four singles over its first six batters, with one error, before a sac bunt and a groundout ended the frame, but not after the hosts had scored three.

Utah's Katie Donovan allowed just one hit, a Madie Aughinbaugh single to center in which the freshman hustled to move to second when the ball dropped between two fielders, over three scoreless innings. Lauren Quense allowed eight runs, four earned, on eight hits and a walk across her two frames before giving way to Taylor Stocks in the third, who allowed two unearned runs on a hit and two walks. Aughinbaugh tossed a clean frame and struck out one.

Quense notched the Rams' other hit, a single to right field, in the fourth inning, and the top three hitters, Sydney Canessa, Jessica Hughes, and Madi Shaw all walked in the later innings but were left stranded. Hughes' base on balls extends her single season record to 53 and was the 90th of her career, while Canessa's was number 38 on the year, moving her into a tie for third with Laura Klaiber (2006).

Fordham will look to advance past Mississippi State tomorrow, to be broadcast again on ESPN3, and if successful, will play the loser of Utah and BYU in the third game of the day.
